Our process starts with Data Migration Strategy. Migration strategy will include a plan of what you are migrating, what needs to be updated, and a data audit. Once the data migration plan has been identified the next step is to extract data from your existing platform. We can utilize export files such as csv or we can use APIs. Now data preparation is the key to a seamless migration. It includes matching to the new layout and platform. At this stage data clean-up is usually done, such as de-duping, merging products into parent/child relationships (if needed), updating images, meta description and more. Migrating to and from Magento, is fairly straightforward. However, the data preparation and clean-up is where most of the migration takes place. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on your instance. It will take longer to migrate multiple stores, especially if you are merging it into one or the reverse from one storefront to multiple. It will also depend on the current state of your data and the new layout of the new platform. For example, if you have a product description that you wish to split into multiple custom fields so that the data is searchable, categorized differently or simply displayed differently this will take longer than a standard data migration where data is simply moved from platform A to platform B.

Magento migration delays are rare but they can occur. Biggest delay occurs during clean-up, if a client decides to re-write descriptions or re-classify products, if there is no automation this can delay the data migration. Another reason for a delay can be with the product page layout. If the product page is not finalized prior to migration, then updates may need to happen to address the customization and match existing data to it. Finally, there maybe a delay due to permissions on platform. As data migration company, we typically try to avoid delays and if they do occur, we try to make it up in other areas.
